Ashley Ames - Meteors

This summer I mainly worked on researching meteors. I dealt with the optical part of the project, where we looked through the MMTO sky camera at a year's worth of data to find meteors. At first we went through and found the "good" nights, which were the nights that were mostly clear and where no moon was present. After going through a years worth of data for that we then set out to find the meteors per night. This took a while since I had to convert the video to a format that was usable with Quicktime and from there go frame by frame to see if there was a meteor. The key thing was that a meteor would only be in a single frame. After finishing a year's worth of data, we found about 300 meteors, give or take. From there we had to find the coordinates of the meteors, in Paint, so we could put it in a program to find its direction on a night sky map. We did this in hopes of finding radiants of the meteors which, in turn, could possibly tell us if there was a meteor shower that month.
